Answers to what goes wrong most often, and where to reach a human.
Plug your Mac's charger into a Tapo smart plug. Open AutoBattery, sign in with your Tapo account, choose that plug, and set your limits. Automation starts as soon as a plug is selected.
One setting first. In the Tapo app, open Me › Third-Party Services › Third-Party Compatibility and turn it on. TP-Link disables local control by default on current firmware, and without this AutoBattery cannot talk to your plug at all.
Discovery uses a broadcast on your local network, so the plug and your Mac must be on the same network — a guest or IoT network will hide it. macOS also has to allow local network access: System Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network, and enable AutoBattery. The scan runs for 20 seconds; give it a moment before retrying.
AutoBattery lists only plugs it can switch. Tapo cameras and bulbs are filtered out because it cannot control them for charging.
Check that automation is on and the mode is Automatic — a Keep charging or No charging lock deliberately ignores the limits. Then check the plug is reachable: the panel says Power on, Power cut or Plug unreachable.
The plug lost power, left the network, or changed address. Open Settings › Plug and press Refresh; AutoBattery follows a plug to a new address automatically once it sees it again.
First check Third-Party Compatibility is on in the Tapo app, under Me › Third-Party Services. With it off, the plug rejects the connection and the failure looks exactly like a wrong password.
Otherwise, use the same email and password as the Tapo app. Sign-in also performs discovery, so a failure here is often a network permission problem — the message under the field says which.
Stopping around 80% and resuming around 30% is a reasonable default for lithium-ion. A narrower band means more switching; a wider one means more time spent near a full charge. If you need a full battery for a trip, use Keep charging rather than raising the limit, then switch back.
